![]() It is not legal for a convicted felon to purchase a firearm from any source, or to even possess one if it were a gift…there is no loophole that allows legal firearm possession by a felon. The fact that firearm sales between private individuals (not from gun dealers) require no background check, whether at a gun show or elsewhere is not a loophole…It is an explicit provision of the background check law which was carefully considered and debated in congress when the law was passed. (It is a civilian weapon with the cosmetic features of a military weapon) An Assault Weapon is not a military assault rifle. An honest question might be “Should the sale of weapons used in ~1% of shootings be restricted based on purely cosmetic criteria?”Politicians and media have played fast and loose with facts, and have been careless with language even when not deliberately sowing confusion: A military style weapon is NOT a military weapon. Polls on that topic show that many people mistakenly think they are machine guns. Nonsense! The pollsters ask if sale of assault weapons should be banned…yet make no attempt to determine if the person answering knows what an “assault weapon” actually is. A depressingly large group of Americans believe it is legal for a convicted felon to buy a gun at a gun show due to a “loophole” they heard about. Seems like a reasonable question, yet very few of the people answering the question have any idea how strict the existing gun laws are. Such polls are largely meaningless. They ask, for example, if we should have stricter gun laws.
